Molecular Pharmacology and Biological Chemistry is a part of the Feinberg School of Medicine located in Chicago, Illinois. Interests here range from molecules to whole organisms with a balanced emphasis on chemistry, structure, and biology. The department's long-term research mission is to use the knowledge gained from basic science investigations to discover and improve therapeutic strategies. Areas of expertise within the faculty include: signal transduction, drug design, cellular and molecular neuroscience, macromolecular structure, molecular toxicology, development genetics, and aging-related disorders.
The individual faculty research programs reflect an interdisciplinary approach to biomedical sciences, emphasizing vertically integrated approaches to the study of biomolecular structure and function. The faculty members bring a range of backgrounds and interests which ultimately focus on the understanding of the molecular basis of action of therapeutic agents and toxins. Each faculty member is in one of the following categories: Primary appointee faculty are responsible for teaching both the Departmentally based and broader-based courses and also maintain research programs. Secondary appointee faculty have the same responsibilities, but hold primary appointments in other departments. Adjunct faculty have appointments outside the university and contribute to MPBC research or teaching programs or both. Research faculty hold appointments due to their unique research expertise, and do not have teaching responsibilities. Emeritus faculty are retired former faculty members whose tenure and accomplishments have achieved this recognition and who have desired to maintain an association with MPBC. The contributions of each of these classes of faculty are important to the achievement of the goals of the Department.
The graduate and postdoctoral education mission of the department is to provide an interdisciplinary framework that supports individual and thematic training programs in the biomedical sciences. The department's professional school education mission is to ensure that students are sufficiently scientifically informed to grasp fundamental data related to disease in humans, to understand how data are generated and be able convert the data to usable facts in clinical practice, and to prepare themselves for continued learning after graduation. The Integrated Graduate Program (IGP) can provide more information on graduate and postdoctoral education.
Department administrative offices are located on the eighth floor of the Ward Building on the Chicago campus of Northwestern University. The chairperson of the department is Dr. Eugene Silinsky. Questions concerning department administration may be directed to Laurie Daniels, the department business administrator, ( 312) 503-4285.
